Spelling From Others
www.spellingcity.com
SpellaRoo - an
online spelling game for grade 2 and up.
I usually let the kids do their spelling tests outside on the
concrete with chalk or they write in the sand with a stick. Basically
they just love to get outside. They also like to come up with little
ideas to remember words such as the difference between meet and meat.
They think of it as we eat meat.
Cheers Michelle
like to have a special spelling idea for each day of
the week. I have all boys this year and they are especially hands-on and
love to get out and do things - this is the best way for them to learn and
retain what I am teaching them. I do know, however, that girls also enjoy
these activities.
Monday might be chalk on the cement, Tuesday might
be writing it in their book or using the magnets on the fridge, Wednesday
might be finger painting their words, Thursday is usually a word game like
a word search or looking for mnemonics.
On Friday I like to keep my options open and this
day usually varies. One of my children's favourite things to do is go on a
word hunt around the homestead compound. I give them a piece of paper that
tells them where to go to find the next clue. On the other side of the
paper, they have to circle the correct spelling of their word before they
can move on. They usually win a small prize if they can get back to the
schoolroom in the set time with all the words correctly circled. This is
great for getting them out of the schoolroom and moving about.
Because all the ASSOA students have digital cameras,
I make sure to take photos of these spelling activities (and a whole heap
of other things that we do during our sets) and send them into our
teachers. Children love sharing what they did with their teachers - and
their parents! There is nothing better than getting Mum and Dad involved
too. Tell them what spelling words THEIR child is learning for the next
week and when they go for a drive or are simply out in the shed or helping
Mum cook, they can ask the child some of the words. The children are so
PROUD to tell them!!!
Another fun thing that we do (and I know this
wouldn't be possible for a lot of people) is, while we are out riding the
horses, I get the children to actually ride the horse around in the shape
of the letters of the word they are spelling. Though this often just ends
in a lot of laughter, it is a VERY enjoyable way and they DO actually
remember the spelling!
I am a strong believer in THRASS and have some of
the charts up in our schoolroom for reference (English really is a tricky
language - especially the spelling!). I like to bring up all our options
in discussions so they can consider all the different letters that can
make one sound!
Well, I think I've babbled on enough for one day - I
hope this helps someone out there or at least inspires you to your own
unique system for the children in your schoolroom - different things will
suit each of the individuals you teach. Good luck!

Mathematics from Others
AAA Math
- A great site for kids to hone their basic math skills, pick by year level
or by operation.
Flashcards for Kids
- Kids can work out basic operations on line, you can choose the
difficulty or put limits on the operations.
http://www.mathworksheetwizard.com - Maths worksheet creator
To help the kids learn their tables and to make it a bit more fun I have
got flip cards (homemade). On one side is a table eg 4 x 4 = but no
answer, on the other side is the answer 16. Place the cards on the desk
and point to one and have the child give you the answer. If its the number
16 the answer is 4 x 4, if its 4 x 4 the answer is 16. You can have them
all the same way up or a mixture of both sides. Use a different colour
cardboard for each set of tables .If you have more than one child then
make it a game. First child takes a turn and if they get it right they
keep the card and the next one has a shot. If they get it wrong then the
other child has the opportunity to see if they can get it right and if so
then they get to keep the card and then have their own shot. This game has
made a big difference to Kaitlynn and Wes as previously they hated tables
but now are keen to show off and compete with each other. Nothing like a
bit of healthy sibling rivalry to get them learning. Hope you can get the
gist of this, if not let me know and I'll try to explain it a bit better.
Regards Michelle (SA govo 2003)
... Basically with the older boys (yr 5/6) they do their set work. If
they have problems with a particular concept / or specific
question after discussion and clarification I'll pose the question in a
different way, use diff, concrete materials, make up my own (more
relevant) example. Also with the two older boys, I set 'number work' as a
permanent part of each day. We decide on a set of times tables and each
day they learn them independently then come to me and I ask them the times
tables in a jumbled order. When they become really confident with one set
we choose another. So they are basically learning / revising a set of
tables each week. As we all know 'learning times tables' doesn't mean we
remember them for life! I think the revision is really important.
For a reception there is a lot more scope in his course to manipulate the
course materials to suit. Before any maths session we do counting in diff
ways. Either counting together, ordering written numbers then taking some
out / rejumbling them / finding the mistake etc. We count cows / ants /
trees - whatever there are lots of! We have day / month / date chart which
we change every day. We all play Uno together which is great for Jake's
maths because he has to put down a number one above or one below the
number which has been put down. Myolene (SA govo
2003)

Fun
Games For A Group
Trains and Stations
Kids sit
in a circle holding hands. A spotter sits in the centre and tries to find
where the train is located. The train is a hand squeeze, which is passed
around the circle. 3 to 4 kids equally spaced are the train stations. When
the train passes thru them, they call out “toot toot”. A station can’t be
identified as the location of the train. Stations may hold the train or
change it’s direction. When Spotters catches train, the two kids change
places.
Sleeping Logs
This game
can be played with 3 people. They lay on the floor in a comfortable
position. I try to catch them moving. If they move and I don’t see it then
it doesn’t count. I usually give the kids 5 chances before they are it.
Blind Man’s
Bluff
The
person who is it is blindfolded. They have to catch everyone. The game
must have boundaries. I usually choose a room and move all sharp objects
out of the way.
Short break games with 1 to 2 children
Board Games
Guess Who
Connect 4
Pictionary
Card
Games
UNO
Snap
Fish
These
games are great to use as a reward for getting to school on time or finish a
piece of work. I also use them to give the kids a break (10 minute) from
the usual activities.
Some of
these games like UNO and Pictionary I score and play as a continuing game
over a week. Playing one hand or do one drawing at a time.
Have a
look at what games you have in the cupboard. Take out the ones, which are
reasonably quick to play. Put them in the schoolroom. Leave the long and
length as after school games |
